Nº 01 — Black Frankincense, Kenya

The world, in a single drop.

Wild Boswellia neglecta resin from the drylands of northern Kenya, distilled at source into a warm, woody, quietly smoky essential oil — and traceable from tree to bottle.

01 — A single ingredient

For six thousand years frankincense has travelled — along the Incense Route to the temples of Egypt, through the souks of Arabia, across the Maritime Silk Road. We follow it back to one tree, in one place, and bottle nothing else.

Which frankincense?

Same family, different temperament. Nº 01 is rich in terpinen-4-ol, which rounds off the sharp, turpentine edge. Nº 02 is the brighter, greener classic.

A wild Boswellia tree with pale, peeling bark in northern Kenya

03 — Origin

Where the black tears grow.

Boswellia neglecta grows wild across the dry north of Kenya, among acacia scrub on sandy red soil. When its bark is wounded, it weeps a resin so dark it is called black frankincense.

The Samburu call the tree Silalei. Samburu women have long gathered its resin for incense, medicine and ceremony; today it is also a vital source of income for communities in these arid lands — a forest product that leaves the tree standing.

05The oil

Read the oil.

A fragrance is chemistry you can smell. This is the fingerprint of Nº 01 — and why it smells warmer and lasts longer than most frankincense.

GC–MS analysis of a Nº 01 sample (B. neglecta). Composition varies naturally from batch to batch; each batch report is linked from its QR code.

8.58%

Terpinen-4-ol — above the 0.1–6% usually found in B. sacra and B. carterii. It softens pinene’s turpentine edge and gives Nº 01 its warm, woody, longer-lasting drydown.

0%

Octyl acetate — none detected. Nº 01 is a pinene-dominant frankincense, the opposite fingerprint to the octyl-acetate types.

How Nº 01 unfolds on a blotter

Top · first 15 minutes

Pine resin, a breath of lemon

Crisp and cool, like morning mist over dry rock.

Heart · to 2 hours

Warm wood, herbs, smoked leather

The resinous body, rounded and slightly sweet, with a medicinal hush.

Base · 2 hours and beyond

Mineral earth, amber smoke

Low, steady and long — the reason perfumers use it to fix a blend.

06Rituals

Use it by the drop.

Four ways to bring it into a day, with the amounts that matter. Always dilute before it touches skin.

3–5 drops

per 100 ml of water in an ultrasonic diffuser. Run for 30–60 minutes, then rest the room for an hour.
